(1)A Case Report on Treating Progressive Supranuclear Palsy with a Combination of Chinese and Western Medicine
Abstract: A case of progressive supranuclear palsy in a 66-year-old woman is presented. The patient complained ofprogressive stiffness of both lower limbs for five years, accompanied by choking and coughing for more than 1 year,” andwas diagnosed with paralysis in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), which was characterized by a deficiency of liver andkidney, and phlegm and blood stasisblocking the collaterals. Western medicine diagnosed it as progressive supranuclearpalsy. The patient was diagnosed with “Parkinson’s disease” several times in the past and was given “polybasic hydrazide”and “amantadine hydrochloride tablets,” etc. The patient did not have significant symptomatic relief, so she sought furthertreatment with a combination of traditional Chinese and Westernmedicine. Based on the concept of deficiency and excess, this disease is categorized as a paralytic disease in Chinese medicine, and the onset of the disease is closely related tothe deficiency of the body after a long period of illness, with wind, phlegm, blood stasis, and deficiency as the mainpathogenetic mechanism. The treatment is based on the combination of disease and evidence, with traditional Chinesemedicine and acupuncture as the main treatments, supplemented by intermediate-frequency pulsed electrical stimulation, transcranial repetitive magnetic stimulation, medicated canisters, wax therapy, traditional Chinese medicine guasha, andacupoint injections. Western medicine is based on symptomatic treatment, and the patient’s symptoms were relievedsignificantly after the combination of Chinese and Western medicine.

Abstract: Objective: To observe the efficacy of oral-facial acupressure combined with oral placement therapy (OPT) inimproving articulation clarity in 120 children with spastic cerebral palsy, and to explore effective therapeutic solutionsfor speech disorders associated with spastic cerebral palsy. Methods: A total of 120 children with spastic cerebral palsyand speech disorders, meeting theinclusion criteria, were randomly assigned into two groups: 60 cases in the treatmentgroup and 60 cases in the control group. The treatment group received orofacial acupressure combined with OPT, whilethe control group received only OPT. The Oral Motor Function Assessment Scale (OMFAS), developed by the ChinaRehabilitation Research Centre (CRRC), was used to evaluate the treatmentoutcomes before and after the intervention. Results: After the treatment, both the treatment and control groups showed improved mobility of the mandible, lips, and tongue. However, the treatment group exhibited significantly better improvement than the control group, with thedifference between the two groups being statistically significant (P < 0.05). Conclusion: Oral-facial acupressure combinedwith OPT can effectively improve articulation clarity in children with spastic cerebral palsy. This combined therapy isrecommended for clinical promotion and application.

Abstract: Insomnia has become an urgent clinical problem in modern society. Current research has found that the gutflora-gut-brain axis plays an important role in regulating insomnia. The state-target theory is a product of the combinationof traditional Chinese medicine and modern molecular biology technology. This paper clarifies the correlation betweenthe state-target theory, the intestinalflora-gut-brain axis, and liver-depression-spleen-deficiency insomnia. The use oftraditional Chinese medicine to regulate the structure and abundance of intestinal flora was also explored, aiming tointegrate traditional Chinese medicine with Western medicine for the prevention and treatment of liver-depression-spleendeficiency insomnia.

Abstract: Cognitive impairment is a common complication after stroke, which not only affects the rehabilitation process ofpatients but also increases the family and socio-economic burden. Finding an effective treatment for cognitive impairmentafter stroke is urgent. Acupuncture can effectively activate blood circulation, dredge collaterals, tonify qi and blood, andregulate yin and yang. It is an effective method for the treatment of cognitive impairment after stroke. Recent studies haveshown that acupuncture combined with various modern rehabilitation techniques, such as transcutaneous vagus nervestimulation, has better clinical effects than either acupuncture or rehabilitation therapy alone. This article reviews theclinical research and basic mechanisms in this field by searching Chinese and English literature from the past 20 years, aiming to provide research ideas for future studies on the combined treatment of post-stroke cognitive impairment andrelated mechanisms.
